BELLA BIGSBY

Nature-Inspired Oil Paintings from Norfolk

FINE OIL PAINTINGS ROOTED IN FOLKLORE, MEMORY AND THE NATURAL WORLD

Bella Bigsby is a self-taught artist working primarily in oil on canvas. Now based in her native Norfolk, she creates richly detailed nature paintings that blend observation with imagination, drawing on memory, myth, and her enduring love for the British landscape.

Her work combines the real and the remembered – tangible textures of bark, feathers, and fur – with a deep emotional connection to place and story. Each piece reflects a world where familiar birds, trees and animals are transformed by folklore and personal meaning.

About Bella

Bella Bigsby spent many years living and exhibiting in California before returning home to Norfolk – a landscape that continues to shape both her life and her art.

She draws inspiration from the wild and quiet places of her surroundings, painting animals and birds that are as rich in symbolism as they are in natural beauty. Her work is a deeply personal expression of nostalgia, connection, and reverence for nature.

“I am interested in the details of things, their textures, in how the place where you grow up shapes the person you are. It becomes an internalised landscape, like the shape of a familiar tree.”

Her influences range from the magical realism of “Golden Age” illustrators like Edmund Dulac and Arthur Rackham to traditional East Asian landscape painting, where balance and stillness give form to emotion and meaning.

“These moments move me to paint, to describe something that is beyond words.”

Bella Bigsby exhibits her work in galleries across Norfolk and Suffolk in the UK and continues to exhibit in California.

In addition to gallery exhibitions, her original paintings and prints are stocked in a number of carefully selected art spaces, boutiques, and independent retailers throughout East Anglia. These local stockists offer a chance to view and purchase Bella’s work in person, connecting her art to the landscapes and communities that inspire it.
